Our Love SwimRun course was set in the beautiful Llyn Padarn Country Park, next to the village of Llanberis and beneath the towering summit of Snowdon, Wales highest mountain. Although our course was a sprint distance at 16km, it was still a challenging route with 300m of climbing and some very technical running sections. The 4 swim sections all took place in Llyn Padarn and varied between 1.1km and 1.4km – the course perhaps favored strong swimmers!
115 people registered for the race. On the day a total of 27 teams and 44 solos started and 100% crossed the finish line (though two took a short cut to miss the longest run due to injury). One of our main aims was to make this race accessible to anyone that wanted to have a go at SwimRun which is why we offered solo places as well as team entries. There was a real mix of abilities and experience from complete novices to experienced Iron Men and SwimRun athletes including visually impaired triathlete, Nicolas Dewalque. Happily everyone met the compulsory cut off time at 3 hours, with the last group having just 5 minutes to spare! Congratulations to everyone for racing so well.
We wanted the event to have a fun, friendly and laid back feel and it was important for me to be at registration and introduce myself, as well as be there at the finish line to award medals and dish out hugs and congratulations to as many people as possible. At our race briefing we tried to share our ethos on taking care of the environment (‘…be careful dumping off the pontoon!’ ;-)) as well as looking out for one another, not just your team mates but all other participants. We know that you took this on board as lots of you went home having made new friends after supporting each other out on the course and during the day. Hopefully some of you will go on to partner up for other SwimRun challenges in the future.
The weather leading up the the day had been quite mixed and we were worried that high winds may have caused problems on the course but in the end we started the race in sunshine and the weather held out well until the last few competitors were left to cross the line. Only our prize giving turned out to be somewhat soggy, but even that couldn’t dampen our spirits!
Solo competitor Matthew Cockerill crossed the finish line first, completing the course in an unbelievably fast 2:13:30hr. The last team crossed the line at 4:33:42hr. A full set of results are below. Well done everyone!

This was our first time organising an event and as it was to be the inaugural SwimRun event in Wales we knew we had to get it right! 8 months of planning and hard work came together and with the help of 30 amazing friends, volunteers and marshals who all gave us their time to make the day happen (Thank you all so much!) we think we pulled it off! Please see the great feed back we received below this report.
So, what does the future hold for Love SwimRun?
Our ambition is to hold Love SwimRun Llanberis again in June 2017 with a maximum of 200 entrants. We will build on everything we have learnt this year (it’s been a steep learning curve) to make next years event even better! We will offer solo and team entries again in order to make the sport of SwimRun accessible to everyone. As soon as we have a date and permissions in place we will open registration, again offering an early bird discount.
We have some new ideas up our sleeves as well and will be looking at holding another event in a different location as well next year! Keep following us on social media to get the news first!
Check out our great collection of event photos HERE and watch our event film below!
Thank you to everyone that came and took part in our first SwimRun event and made this such a great day, many of you now feel like friends and I can’t wait to see you again next year! We would also like to thank our friends, volunteers, our sponsors Zone3, IcebugUK, Padarn Country Park, Surf-lines & Fabian4 for all your support and for helping make Love SwimRun Llanberis 2016 happen. Roll on 2017!

Race Organisers – Love SwimRun
I just wanted to say a massive thank you and congratulations for putting in a fantastic event today. I loved every minute of it, even when the heavens opened and the water got a bit choppy for the third swim! The course was great, the organisation brilliant and the marshals were so friendly and cheerful!! You should be so proud of what you have done. I really hope that you will run it again next year as I for one will sign up!!
Thank you, thank you! What a great event! Tough mind!! Well done marshals, canoeists etc for helping and keeping us safe! Will be back next year!
Congratulations on organising a great event on Saturday and thank you for encouraging me to have a go. From the start, you gave me all the information I needed and on the day I had no concerns about the route or whether I was in safe hands. I was surprised by how much harder I found the swimming compared to the running. My arms will stop aching eventually! I hope the ‘proper’ athletes enjoyed it as much as someone like me who was in it for the views and to see if I really could keep going for 4 hours. I actually stopped halfway up the big run to take photos, it was so nice. I wish I could have taken pictures during the swims as I rarely get to swim in such amazing surroundings. The marshalls were encouraging and helpful. At every check point I had my flagging energies boosted. Next time, I must make sure I take in more fuel as I was totally drained by the end… Thanks again for giving me the chance to try something new. I will keep an eye out for next year’s event!
Thank you so much for EVERYTHING! I’ve taken part in lots of swimming events and a few running ones too – and your event was one of the best organised, friendliest and most fun. WELL DONE Chloe. I’ve told all of my swimming friends – I’m sure some will come up to see you next year…I really like combining swimming with running – especially as the distance was just right for me. So, yes, another swim run next year!Keep up the excellent work – I’m sure that LoveSwim Run will grow.
Our first ever Swim/Run event and what a fantastic, friendly event it was too. Fantastic location, beautiful scenery,Llanberis/ Lyn Padarn/Snowdonia, wonderful weather, well organised, well signed, well marshalled and different from the our more usual Triathlon events. Running in my new Zone 3 swim/run wetsuit didn’t feel much more restrictive than running in a Tri suit and besides, we had 4 opportunities to jump in the Lake and cool off with a bit of a swim. Swimming in trail shoes, compensated by yusing a pull bouy wasn’t a problem either. The course can be as challenging or as casual as you want to make it depending if you are going for a time or not. We didn’t go for a time this year but will definitely be doing so next year all being well. Big thanks to all involved in the organisation, support and also the other participants who all helped make the day. Thank you and see you next year!
Just wanted to say what an absolutely fantastic event you put on yesterday. So well organised and such a great atmosphere. The course was brilliant and was great for everyone who was there from complete novices to people who might have their sights set on Otillo and everyone in between. One of the best events we’ve ever done. The course was clearly marked, the timing presented no problems and everyone we spoke to thought it was an amazing event. Hard to see how you could have done anything better. It was brilliant. We loved it. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much x
Absolutely fantastic event…really loved it. Huge thanks to the Chloe and the team as well as all the helpers and supporters. Looking forwards to your next one!
Thanks Chloe! We are looking forward to your mail to tell us how to enter for next year! You should be very proud – that was a really special weekend and an absolutely brilliant event. I am still buzzing. See you next time!
@Loveswimrun great day in Llanberis. Well done all competitors, organisers & marshals. Very pleased with 3rd and looking forward to 2017
This is one of the great young events. Event management and support was great. It’s set in stunning scenery and has an epic feel to it despite really being an introduction to longer swim-run events. The solo option marks it out as even more accessible removing the need to find, train and cajole a suitable partner into participating.
First ever Welsh Swimrun event and it will be very hard to beat. Fantastic scenery, lovely clean lake. Great marshals and good weather. First time I have ever done a Swimrun event and I loved it but it was brutal. Horrendous hill not included! I loved the course. Technical downhill run sections, clean clear water for swimming in. Far harder than it sounds at 16km combined swimming & running but big thanks to all the organisers, safety & marshals. Great day & see you in 2017!
The most enjoyable event I’ve ever taken part in! A lovely friendly event. Great atmosphere. Beautiful scenery. Small numbers and unique route.
